Cottage Craft Works offers an assortment of Amish Organic flours and grains to meet a variety of needs. Buckwheat is a favorite for Gluten-free diets because it is a fruit seed and not a grain. Despite its name, it has no relation to wheat and is actually closer related to rhubarb!
In addition, it is high in fiber and protein as well as containing many health-boosting nutrients such as lysine, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, manganese, and vitamin B. It also contains heart-healthy omega-3.
Buckwheat can be beneficial for managing diabetes by helping to reduce blood glucose levels. It has also been found to reduce cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure!
All of these benefits translate to our canine friends as well. In fact, as more research is coming out that legumes such as peas, lentils, and chickpeas can have negative effects on dogs, many dog food brands have been searching for alternatives and have found a great option in buckwheat.
Here is a recipe for Buckwheat/Sweet Potato Dog Treats for dogs who have grain allergies, sent to us by a customer.
Ingredients
1 Cup Mashed Sweet Potato
2 1/2 Cups Buckwheat Flour
1/4 Cup Water
2 Eggs
Preheat Oven to 350 degrees.
Mix Buckwheat Flour, Sweet Potato, Water & Eggs in a large bowl, until a dough forms. Turn dough out on a well Buckwheat floured surface & roll out dough to approximately 1/2 inch thick. Cut out shapes with a doughnut cutter or other item. Place cutouts on a large cookie sheet using parchment paper. Bake until crisp or until treats just start to smoke. About 35-45 mins depending on your oven. Cool for at least 10 mins before feeding to dogs.
DO NOT add sugar to this mix, there is plenty of sugar in sweet potatoes for use as dog treats.
If you are making these for "Jawbreaker" snacks for human consumption, you can add brown sugar and spices such as cinnamon, ginger, or pumpkin pie seasoning to taste and substitute water with applesauce, for a long-lasting trail snack. These can be frozen and kept indefinitely and used as needed.
Reduce cooking time for a softer treat.
